Date: September 15, 2008

Excerpt from Article
Squiggly drawings, misspelled words and unidentifiable pictures may seem like pre-K play, but Frede says the symbols and efforts represent students' interest and an opportunity for development.
Our Book By Us! provides a reading component and open-ended questions that encourage students to relate to the reading passages. Children may respond by drawing pictures and symbols or by writing words that represent their thoughts and ideas.
Students invent their own understanding of language and literacy, and educators have the challenging task of responding to that range of communication skills, Frede said.
